The Chicago Athletic Association opened in 1893 as an exclusive private club for elite Chicago businessmen, aligned with the World’s Columbian Exposition to reflect the city’s growing prominence.
Designed by Holabird & Roche, the building is a rare example of Venetian Gothic architecture in Chicago. Its location across from Millennium Park was intentionally chosen to offer sweeping views of Lake Michigan.

At its peak, the club operated under a strict men-only membership, serving as a private hub for networking and influence among business leaders and politicians.
Inside, it featured one of the most advanced indoor athletic facilities of its time, including handball courts, a running track, billiards rooms, and even a bowling alley—decades ahead of modern fitness clubs.
Spaces like the Cherry Circle Room and the Game Room, now vibrant and social, were once refined settings where members conducted business and socialised in private.
During Prohibition, the building quietly became a place where alcohol still flowed behind closed doors, reinforcing its reputation as an elite space where rules were often bent.

Today, the building has been transformed into a hotel and is widely recognised as a leading example of adaptive reuse in Chicago.
Its preserved interiors and reimagined spaces create a unique experience where history and modern hospitality coexist, making it a true time capsule of the city’s past and present.
