WEST VIRGINIA — September 23, 2025 - Smokeball, the industry-leading legal practice management software platform, today announced an exclusive partnership with the West Virginia State Bar to provide all 9,000 of its members with free access to Smokeball Bill, Smokeball’s trust accounting and billing software solution. This tool will help solo and small legal practitioners effectively, efficiently and compliantly manage their client trust accounts for improved client service.

Smokeball and the West Virginia State Bar recognize the important role solo, small and rural law firms play in every local community. However, many of these firms struggle to handle trust accounting and billing compliantly. According to the 2023 State of U.S. Small Law Firms Report, software for case management, legal research and e-billing/invoicing are some of the biggest technology needs for law practices. Firms often rely on manual processes that hinder, disrupt or delay more high-value client work. By providing Smokeball Bill for free, all attorneys that are members of the West Virginia State Bar will now have access to a user-friendly software solution that ensures trust accounting compliance and simplifies billing.

“The West Virginia State Bar is committed to supporting our members with resources that strengthen their practice and serve the public,” said Mary Jane Pickens, Executive Director of the West Virginia State Bar. “By partnering to provide Smokeball Bill for free to our members, we are providing access to technology that simplifies trust accounting, supports compliance, and frees attorneys to focus more time on their clients.”

Manually managing trust accounting often leads to compliance errors and malpractice claims. Smokeball Bill makes it simple for law firm members to easily comply with trust accounting regulations. The software also helps firms more easily send and collect invoices and bills.

“At Smokeball, our mission has always been to help small law firms run stronger practices,” said Jane Oxley, CRO and co-founder of Smokeball. “By partnering with the West Virginia State Bar, we’re ensuring every member has no-cost access to technology.”

This is Smokeball's 18th free product partnership with a state bar association, following the most recent announcement of its free product partnership with the Kentucky Bar Association.
