Inspired by Smokeball’s community heroes? If you’re looking to give back to your community, here are some ways legal professionals can help bring justice and support to those who need it most.
Connect with your local Bar, a legal aid society, or a legal clinic to offer your time and expertise. Pro Bono Net, American Bar Association, and National Legal Aid & Defender Association all have great resources for those seeking pro bono opportunities. Volunteering does not have to be time-intensive; many bars offer phone clinics where attorneys donate just an hour of their time to field basic questions about their area of law.
Collaborate with law schools to support pro bono initiatives and legal clinics run by students and professors. Or educate high school students about their legal rights and responsibilities through outreach programs like ACS’s Constitution in the Classroom.
Provide guidance and one-on-one training to less established lawyers who are looking to make a difference through their legal work.
Use your legal expertise to advocate for changes in laws and policies that will benefit marginalized communities.
Community is what drives us at Smokeball. Every day we see legal professionals advocating for people who face inequality, discrimination, poverty, or who are otherwise struggling–often without expecting recognition for their pro bono work. But we believe acts of kindness are worth recognizing. Smokeball's Beacon Award acknowledges this transformational community work.
Of course! We love your commitment and want to hear how your community work develops. We encourage you to apply—and to tell a colleague who might be inspired by your great work.
This is your chance to brag! Remember that you know your work, but we don’t. So give us context for your work, and lean into the details. Be sure to highlight the results and outcomes from the work. When you think of impact consider people, hours, revenue, and scope (i.e. # of volunteer or pro bono hours worked; # of people helped; $$ generated or donated; x months or years committed to the work, etc.)
