2025 Beacon Award Winners

2023 Smokeball Beacon Winner Chlece Walker-Neal-Murray

Najla Abu-Shaaban

Abu-Shaaban & Associates PC

As an immigration attorney, Najla is recognized with the Beacon Award for her transformative legal advocacy and deep commitment to community impact. Her work has reunited over 150 families, helped launch dozens of small businesses—which have created over 800 jobs in Stafford, TX—and secured legal status for professionals who now fill vital roles in healthcare, education, and beyond. Najla dedicates 150+ hours annually to pro bono services, ensuring justice is accessible to the most vulnerable. Smokeball honors her with the Beacon Award for challenging systemic injustices, educating the public, and using the legal system to build bridges between communities.

“Receiving the Smokeball Beacon Award is an incredible honor that reflects the strength of the families and communities I serve. Pro bono work ensures justice isn’t determined by someone’s ability to pay—it’s the most meaningful part of my practice.”

Jim Fine

Roosevelt University Legal Clinic

In June 2024, Jim opened and now directs the Roosevelt University Legal Clinic (RULC). He conceived this clinic to provide low- and no-cost legal services to Cook and Lake County residents. The program has already served more than 150 clients with estate plans, probate matters, setting up LLCs, landlord-tenant issues, small claims advising, name changes, and family law matters. RULC assists underserved populations, including immigrants and LGBTQ+ students, while providing invaluable real-world training for aspiring paralegals. While Jim works as a full-time professor, he additionally dedicates about 30 hours/week to clinic tasks. Smokeball honors him with the Beacon Award for his unwavering dedication to accessible legal services and hands-on student education.

“It has been my mission to help people in underserved communities with their legal issues and problems. The Roosevelt University Legal Clinic has allowed me to advocate for the many folks in the Chicago area who don't otherwise have the resources to access the legal system.”

Get Involved

Inspired by Smokeball’s community heroes? If you’re looking to give back to your community, here are some ways legal professionals can help bring justice and support to those who need it most.

Find a pro bono program

Connect with your local Bar, a legal aid society, or a legal clinic to offer your time and expertise. Pro Bono Net, American Bar Association, and National Legal Aid & Defender Association all have great resources for those seeking pro bono opportunities. Volunteering does not have to be time-intensive; many bars offer phone clinics where attorneys donate just an hour of their time to field basic questions about their area of law.

Partner with Educational Institutions

Collaborate with law schools to support pro bono initiatives and legal clinics run by students and professors. Or educate high school students about their legal rights and responsibilities through outreach programs like ACS’s Constitution in the Classroom.

Offer mentorship & training

Provide guidance and one-on-one training to less established lawyers who are looking to make a difference through their legal work.

Advocate for Policy Change

Use your legal expertise to advocate for changes in laws and policies that will benefit marginalized communities.

Beacon Award FAQs

Why the Beacon Award?

Community is what drives us at Smokeball. Every day we see legal professionals advocating for people who face inequality, discrimination, poverty, or who are otherwise struggling–often without expecting recognition for their pro bono work. But we believe acts of kindness are worth recognizing. Smokeball's Beacon Award acknowledges this transformational community work.

Can I submit for the Beacon Award if I applied or was acknowledged previously?

Of course! We love your commitment and want to hear how your community work develops. We encourage you to apply—and to tell a colleague who might be inspired by your great work.

How do I write a winning submission?

This is your chance to brag! Remember that you know your work, but we don’t. So give us context for your work, and lean into the details. Be sure to highlight the results and outcomes from the work. When you think of impact consider people, hours, revenue, and scope (i.e. # of volunteer or pro bono hours worked; # of people helped; $$ generated or donated; x months or years committed to the work, etc.)
